Draft 1
The first
draft Documentary I had made lacked important conventions of a documentary such
as; transitions, sound and lighting. When watching my first draft back, the
introduction of the Journalist was quiet and hard to hear due to it being
recorded on a mobile so not all of the sound was picked up. On Adobe Premiere
Pro I was able to pick specific parts out from my documentary and make the
volume higher. However, on my draft I had used two important conventions of a
crime documentary; Voiceovers and Text. By integrating both of these into my
drafts it gave me positive comments from other peers saying that the mixture of
a establishing video (to set the scene) and voiceover worked well
together.
Final Documentary
For my final construction of the
documentary, I decided to use the introduction/establishing video with the
mixture of a voiceover again at the start from my first draft. However, I
enhanced the lighting and the volume of the beginning clips and also added transitions
such as 'wipe' and 'dip to black', allowing for the documentary to run smoother
and not look repetitive. I wanted to create the first part of a documentary as
my construction as I believe the beginning gives the most critical information
to the viewers. I embedded 2 interviews interviewing the prisoners mother and
teacher, I made sure the setting fitted in with their roles and the text also
highlighted who they were. In addition to this, I also embedded short video
clips from inside an actual prison to make the documentary seem more realistic.
I used voiceovers throughout to ensure that added detail about the prisoners background was mentioned, such as his mental illness. Reconstructions within a crime documentary are an important factor as it gives the audience an insight into what actually happened to the victims. I decided to add eerie music and place the clips into a black and white filter to make it stand out from the rest of the clips, therefore making it more engaging to the audience.
